Abbas calls for general strike to protest Israeli violence against protesters

ISRAEL PALESTINE | 14 de mayo de 2018

Ramallah, West Bank, May 14 (efe-epa).- The Palestinian president on Monday called for a general strike to protest Israel's violent response to Palestinian rallies in Gaza against the inauguration of the US Embassy in Jerusalem, which killed 52 protesters and injured more the 2,400.

Mahmoud Abbas called Palestinians to protest on Tuesday on the occasion of Nakba ("Catastrophe" in Arabic) Day, referring to the mass expulsion of Palestinians both before and after the founding of the state of Israel in 1948.

Palestine Liberation Organization Executive Committee member Wasel Abu Yousef told EFE that Tuesday's strike will protest the "massacre" of Palestinians in Gaza.

More protests in the West Bank are expected for Tuesday, including a morning rally, with demonstrators scheduled to move toward the Beit El military checkpoint.

For the afternoon there will be another rally "in which 52 candles will be lighted to represent the 52 Palestinians who were killed today in Gaza," he added.

This afternoon, Palestinian factions met Abbas in Ramallah to agree on the next steps to take, a meeting attended by PLO Executive Committee and Al Fatah Central Committee members.

On Monday, more than 3,000 Palestinians marched from Yasser Arafat Square in Ramallah to the Qalandiya checkpoint, which separates Ramallah from Jerusalem.
