Firefighters battle to extinguish Yemen fire after blast rocks key refinery

YEMEN ACCIDENT | 12 de enero de 2019

Aden, Yemen, Jan 12 (efe-epa).- A large plume of dense smoke rose above the Yemeni port city of Aden on Saturday after an explosion caused a vast oil storage tank to explode and catch fire in a key refinery in the war-torn country.

Firefighters battled to combat the blaze sparked by an explosion that rocked Aden's main oil refinery late Friday, while the causes behind the detonation remain unknown.

The tank containing 7,000 tonnes of oil was destroyed due to the fire, while the full extent of damage sustained by the oil refinery was still unknown.

The refinery processed imported oil to meet the local needs amid decreasing fuel supplies in the wake of the war in Yemen, which stopped exporting oil and gas in 2015.

Aden became the provisional headquarter of the internationally recognized Yemeni government of self-exiled President Abdo Rabu Mansur Hadi, who has lived in Saudi Arabia since Houthi rebels seized control of the Yemeni capital of Sana'a in 2014.
